Although I am about to start teaching middle school I found your post super helpful. I LOVE Lucy Calkins and have read her third-grade books cover to cover and am onto her sixth-grade volume. The connection between grades is quite amazing actually! I never thought to do away with pencils all together during writing workshop until your post (honestly I can't stand pencils myself, the sound on paper bothers me unless they are very sharp and then having to get up and sharpen them constantly is just a pain). I am definitely going to have my 6th graders use pens!
School Days SimplifiedAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17953260319487237160noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537382305876397181.post-20029452274258843112015-07-22T00:16:22.508-04:002015-07-22T00:16:22.508-04:00So you think once we have introduced the workshop ...So you think once we have introduced the workshop and procedures, we should start Unit 1? Your students are sure to love it. I think you are on the right track with starting writing workshop with teaching procedures right from the start. Regardless of the kids being exposed to it or not, they will pick up on the routines rather quickly if you remain consistent. I will be blogging more about classroom routines and what your first few lessons during the launch can look like but I wouldn't be afraid to start at the beginning of the year. If you set the routines from the start, it will be easier for the students to practice and get the hang of it. I hope that will help you get set up for the year!Jaymehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07923304464008448607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537382305876397181.post-91027140605271883322015-07-21T21:08:33.592-04:002015-07-21T21:08:33.592-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Jaymehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07923304464008448607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537382305876397181.post-11409887228640019482015-07-21T21:04:30.917-04:002015-07-21T21:04:30.917-04:00Great post! But, the basics is that when students are writing, it's imperative that they see the entire writing process. From idea, to draft, and all of their revisions in between. Having them use a pen is truly just a visual aide to allow them to see the steps they're taking through the writing process not to mention that it helps them write more fluently. That's what the writing workshop wants for students, for them to write throughout the entire writing process. I hope that helps! Thank you so much for stopping by!Jaymehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07923304464008448607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537382305876397181.post-67751405576144002452015-07-21T14:58:07.881-04:002015-07-21T14:58:07.881-04:00I am so excited about this!! I'm a little concerned though because our K-1 students have not been exposed to writing workshop or her Units of Study. One part of this I am really struggling with is the whole no-erasing/pen thing. I just finished "No More 'I'm Done'" by Jennifer Jacobson and she said the same thing- even going so far as to cut the erasers off of her students' pencils. Can you give me a little bit more info on why it is a good idea to have them correct with pen as opposed to erasing and fixing mistakes? I see benefits to both, and I've always told kiddos that we all make mistakes- that's why pencils have erasers! I guess I'm just not very well-versed on teaching kids to edit quite yet! Any tips or any more info you could provide on this would be very helpful! Thanks! I am SO looking forward to reading the rest of this series!! :)

Casey
Miss Case's ClassroomMiss Casehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15274937172766473842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537382305876397181.post-17578162392233794652015-07-21T11:15:10.964-04:002015-07-21T11:15:10.964-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Miss Casehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15274937172766473842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3537382305876397181.post-6099456073193967932015-07-21T03:14:06.146-04:002015-07-21T03:14:06.146-04:00Your post is so great! I especially like the idea of leaving out different kinds of paper and changing it throughout the year as students become more confident writers. The pen idea is new to me, but it totally makes sense. I love how it emphasizes the fact that we WILL make mistakes, but we can learn and grow from them.
