One Year Blogiversary Celebration!

BIG NEWS!  My little ol' blog is turning one!  I can't believe that this site has already been up and running for one year.  I'm so humbled and grateful for the visits to my little piece of cyberspace, the comments, and all the love on my social media outlets.  I started this blog with the hope that my crazy ideas would help inspire other teachers out there during a time when I was feeling somewhat alone in this teaching community.  Well, not only have I been so inspired by OTHER bloggers and gotten so many ideas from this community but I have found so many wonderful people who have quickly become some of my closest friends.

One of those amazing people who I have connected with through blogging is the sweet, motivated, and VERY talented Diana from My Day in K.  Not only has she been a great person to go through this blogging journey with, but she has quickly become my voice of reason, TpT editor, and therapist.  This profession can be hard and everyone deserves a person to be their sounding board.  Thankfully, Diana has quickly become that person for me.

Leaving work at work rarely happens which is why this blog has been such an amazing outlet for me. It has been a way to sort through my ideas and figure out that I have a voice in this very important world of education. When Diana and I realized that our blogs were both turning one at similar times, we knew we had to celebrate and give back to our readers for following us on this journey!

So, when we were thinking of celebrating, we knew we needed to get more people involved who have been supporters in this journey and a way to give back to some fabulous readers.  The response that we have had from so many fellow bloggers and TpTers was so humbling and seriously blew us away!  We are so thankful for the support of this community who have been so amazing to us.

Five for Friday

Hello old friend.  It has been too long!  Where have I been you ask?  Under a pile of report cards, unchecked papers, and busy life in general.  But, I'm so happy to be back and bringing some exciting things your way!  So sit back and grab a cup of coffee and see what we've been up to in my classroom.

My new reading workshop schedule has been up and running for a few weeks and it has been a game changer for my guided reading time.  My students this year need a little more structure and having them on individual schedules has been such a huge help with keeping everyone accountable for their work.  I have five different reading groups in my room, four that I work with and one that my co-teacher works with. Each group has their own schedule that highlights their Meet With the Teacher day and the rotation that they have for the other five days of the week.  Groups are met with 4 days of the week (we double up on Tuesdays) and that frees up Fridays to be a check-in day where I can do some intensive practice with my struggling readers.  The rotations include:

Meet With the Teacher
Read to Self
Buddy Read
Listen to Reading
Reading Response

I'm hoping to have a more detailed post up for you soon about how this 20 minute reading time works in my classroom, but if you would like to see more you can click on the images below to check out my Reading Workshop Starter Kit in my TpT store.

My first graders are knee deep into opinion writing and they are doing a GREAT job saying their opinions.  BUT we haven't really been grasping the concept of giving a quick sneak peek in our writing and are instead telling ALL ABOUT the movies or restaurants or toys that we are reviewing.  So, this called for an intensive session during some shared writing time.  We practiced stating our opinion at the start of our writing and then just stating the most important information like who can go there or use it, what it is, and where can you get it or find it.  I need to find more time in my day to have experiences like that.

The Scholastic book fair came to my school and I don't know who was more excited, the kids or the teachers!  It happens to be one of my favorite days of the year!  I picked up some new great titles that are perfect for my current fairy tale/folktale unit and our upcoming realistic fiction unit.  I grabbed Last Stop on Market Street, The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot, and Ninja Red Riding Hood.  Have you read any of them before?  I can't wait to share them with my kids.

My March Teacher's Crate came today and it was such a nice surprise to kick start my long weekend!  I can't wait to read the Good Wolf Bad Wolf and use that adorable hippo bookmark!  Really though, what teacher can't use more shiny bulletin board letters?!  The answer is no one.  Have you ordered your monthly box yet? If not, you really should!

I can't believe it, but my sweet sweet friend Diana from My Day in K and I have been blogging for ONE YEAR!  This has been such an exciting and rewarding journey so far and we couldn't help but celebrate this milestone with a little celebration!  Check back tomorrow for a chance to win some amazing prizes!  I just can't begin to describe how overwhelmed I am by all of the amazing fellow bloggers and TpTers who donated so many wonderful products for all of you.  I can't wait to share it with you!

I want to leave you today with a little bit of inspiration that has really been helping me lately.  If you are on Spring Break or just enjoying some time with family and friends over this holiday weekend, I hope you can rest easy knowing that your talents and hard work isn't going unnoticed.  Continue to do you because YOU are doing a great job!

Happy weekend everyone!
